Mt Toby Sundial

We started making the hour tiles on the 30th. it was really an experiment to see what they would look like and if there were any problems I hadn't thought of.

The committee that is responsible for taking care of and deciding how the grounds are used will find a good place for the location for the sundial..

there weren't that many kids and lots of stuff to paint so Nina Don and I started making the numbers (I took the Pictures)

This is the idea, its an Anamematic sundial. we will make the hour stones out of concrete with the numbers made of broken tile cemented in

ordinary wheat past is used to glue the tile (colored side down) to the paper

then the cement is poured in. once its hardened the tile is turned over and the plastic mold and paper are removed.

why is this six pointing in wrong direction?

Once the painting was done and the pizza all gone Malcolm and Rex helped Nina mix the firs batch of cement

making the mosaic numbers was easier and more fun than I anticipated. but I think that the numbers need to be much bigger and made to really fill up the whole circle.

What's next?

Patrick, Malcolm and Rafael joined the crew last Sunday and we really got a lot of very nice mosaics done

Rex has volunteered to do the  photography for the site

We still  need some one to do some interviews of the  people that put all the pieces together, and who can help explaign how the sundial work and how it is made.

Drew helped make some of mosaic's last Sunday I hope she can help again next Sunday

The stick in the grown will be the center of the sundial.

we will be marking the locations of all the tiles soon.

We will first  find Celestial north by using the suns shadow at 'solar noon'(The vertical line in the center) then draw another line perpendicular to it (the bottom line of the rectangle). All the measurements will come from those two lines.

we will make a big triangle out of string and use it to help transfer the measurements from this drawing to the

This is a very silly u-tube video about sundials.

Maybe we could make one of our own

The sundial is hibernating for the winter.

Jordan, Malcolm and I measured out the locations for three of the hours (cement stones) using a huge home made triangle and a tape measure. we found the North South (Celestial and not magnetic) line by marking the shadow of a hanging chain exactly at solar noon, thats when the sun is a its highest point in the sky (Its zenith)

I came back the week after and dug some holes for the stones so that lawn mower can run over them, when the ground thaws nest spring we can make some plans to finish, see you in the spring.
